The sales engineer faces a variety of challenges in
the technical sales process. The most important asset
the sales engineer possesses is knowledge of the product,
its technology, and industry. But possessing this knowledge
is not enough. Being able to communicate it and to distribute
it in the right portions throughout each stage of the
sales cycle, are critical to your success. Mastering
technical knowledge and applying it appropriately are
two very different skills.
On a larger level, sales engineers must be able to select
the right sales strategy for each of their clients.
Each client is a separate universe, driven by unique
motivational factors. In some cases, pricing and economics
may be the driving forces, while others may be quality
or technology-related. Still other customers may seek
relationship-based advantages, in services and customer
participation.
We have learned about a variety of tools the sales engineer
uses as a communication strategy. While one cannot rely
on these tools alone, they serve to reinforce much of
the content the salesperson presents throughout the
sales process. Sales tools help reinforce your organization's
image and are critical in providing an in-depth level
of product education to the customer. Equally vital
are data collection tools, which assist the salesperson
in marketing and maximizing the usefulness of the information
gathered about the customer.
Finally, the sales field is also about interpersonal
communications skills. Your ability to be a good listener,
to demonstrate appropriate etiquette, and to be proficient
and tactful when offering guidance, all relate back
to intuitive and interpersonal abilities. Much of the
interpersonal exchange is also designed to demonstrate
your own integrity and to build trust with the customer.
It is highly unlikely that the sales process will be
simplified any time soon. As products become more technologically
complex, sales engineers will be expected to communicate
their value to others. Some customers will be knowledgeable
and others will require quick, effective educational
approaches. The sales engineer serves as the critical
link between the scientific, technical world of the
manufacturer and the practical, down-to-earth world
of the customer. Take pride in your skill.
