| If your first job requires you to relocate try to schedule your start date for at least a week after you arrive in your new location. You will need time to arrange for utilities (phone, electric, cable, etc.), open a bank account and take care of all the other items necessary to set-up your new household. Many of these tasks can only be accomplished during business hours and having them all completed before you start your job will allow you to focus on the job. Plus you avoid having to take time off during the business day. Most companies are flexible in arranging a mutual starting date, especially when relocation is involved. Be sure to review all of the tasks you will need to complete your relocation so you have adequate time to accomplish everything. Work with the HR department and your supervisor to pick the appropriate starting date. |
