To begin, take a deep breath and relax. The first time
we try anything new there is always a little apprehension.
That first day on the job is no different. Remember,
you have worked long and hard to reach this point. Approach
the beginning of your career with optimism and curiosity.
And in reality, the first day is actually easy. Human
Resources (HR) is typically your introduction to the
company. This is where you will complete your employment
paperwork, learn about your benefits package (vacation,
health insurance, savings plan) and have your payroll
processing completed. Depending on the size of the company
(larger companies typically offer more options), you
will be confronted with a vast array of terms and programs
such as Health Maintenance Organization (HMO), Primary
Care Physician, Flexible Spending Accounts, Defined
Benefit Plan, 401(k), and many others. These plans are
for your health insurance, savings plan and retirement.

| If
your first job requires you to relocate try to schedule
your start date for at least a week after you arrive
in your new location. You will need time to arrange
for utilities (phone, electric, cable, etc.), open
a bank account and take care of all the other items
necessary to set-up your new household. Many of
these tasks can only be accomplished during business
hours and having them all completed before you start
your job will allow you to concentrate and focus
on the job. Plus you avoid having to take time off
during the business day. Most companies are flexible
in arranging a mutual starting date, especially
when relocation is involved. Be sure to review all
of the tasks you will need to complete your relocation
so you have adequate time to accomplish everything.
Work with the HR department and your supervisor
to pick the appropriate starting date. |
