In
this module you learned about what to expect
during your first days on the job, how to
relate to your supervisor and co-workers,
some of the non-technical skills you will
need to succeed, the need for continuing
education, the performance review, and methods
to help you advance your career as an engineer.
Engineering is a dynamic and exciting profession.
So as you begin your career, approach the
experience with a sense of optimism and
curiosity.
From the start, make a good first impression
on your supervisor and co-workers. Demonstrate
you are part of the team by having good
attendance, being punctual, showing a willingness
to learn, and offering to assist with the
group tasks. Be sure to dress and act professionally.
Display a positive attitude and always make
your boss look good. Position yourself for
advancement by taking advantage of the training
opportunities offered to you and work to
develop your technical and management credentials.
It is possible that your experience will
differ from what has been illustrated in
this module. The intent of this module is
not to describe every circumstance you might
encounter, but to raise your awareness level,
build your confidence and help ease your
transition from student to practicing engineer.
With an understanding of several common
workplace situations and of how you might
react, you are now better prepared for the
unexpected as well as the expected.
Stay focused on your tasks, always keep
an eye toward the future, and have fun.
Best wishes for a successful and rewarding
career.
