  What is the Boss Looking for in You?

Demonstrate the ability to get things done! This quality is a combination of three basic characteristics:

1. Initiative, which is expressed in energy to start things and aggressiveness to keep them, moving briskly.

2. Resourcefulness or ingenuity, i.e., the faculty for finding ways to accomplish the desired result

3. Persistence (tenacity), which is the disposition to persevere in spite of difficulties, discouragement or indifference.

 
Your direct supervisor is not only looking for technical competence, but the intangible qualities in you that will make you a valuable asset to the group and the company. Below are several actions which can demonstrate those qualities and make you stand out:
Take the initiative. Don't wait for work. Seek it out. Fill a need when you see a void or an opportunity (and make sure your supervisor knows you have offered to help).
Show that you can think. Be creative and innovative. Come up with a new way to perform a task or a new solution to a problem.
Show a willingness to take on projects that have high visibility. That is how you get noticed.
