  SMART Goals

Your career path is up to you. Don't delay your preparations for advancement. Start by listing some of your immediate short-term goals. If you have identified long-term professional goals, list them as well. Set a timetable. Be ambitious - define what success means to you.

A good rule to follow when you develop goals is to make sure they are SMART Goals:
Specific - avoid goals that are not well defined.
Measurable - you need a method to assess your status and measure your results.
Action oriented - the goal must focus on your actions.
Realistic - is the goal obtainable?
Time and Resource constrained - have a completion date and assess the needed resources.
Now start working toward your goals. From your goals list, develop a list of actions that will lead towards those goals. For example - a short-term goal might be promotion from level Engineer I to level Engineer II in two years or less. A long-term goal might be to earn a Master's degree in engineering within five years. Only you can make it happen. Below is a Goal Action Form that you can use to assist your planning.
