Even
though engineering plays a critical role in nearly all
aspects of our lives, the work of an engineer can seem
like a mystery to those outside the profession. But
it's really very straightforward. First, engineers see
an opportunity to improve people's quality of life.
They gather information, brainstorm ideas with teams
of people and study possible solutions. The best options
are selected based on cost, ease of use, impact on the
environment and other factors. Communicating the solution
through writing and speaking to groups is the next step.
Finally, they work with interesting people in other
professions to oversee the building or implementation
of their idea. Engineering is the way dreams become
reality.
One
question students often ask is, "What is the difference
between engineering and science?" A helpful explanation
is that scientists study the universe to generate knowledge.
Engineers make use of that knowledge to meet human needs
by creating machines, products, systems, processes and
technologies that have not previously existed.
Engineers
have an impact in so many areas. Engineers help developing
countries create safe water for drinking, design safer
and faster airplanes and roller coasters, create new
technologies to improve national security and protect
information on the internet, improve the quality and
taste of the food we eat, design medical devices to
improve healthcare, and develop alternative energy sources.
These are just a few of the exciting challenges and
opportunities in which engineers play a crucial role.
Your specific job will vary depending on your interests,
such as engineering design, research, sales & marketing,
education and business administration, to name a few
possibilities.
This
module will help you explore from a variety of perspectives
whether engineering is the right major for you. It will
also help you prepare for and give you tips on how to
succeed as an engineering student. We hope you find
the information and resources useful.
